Germany – Mexico

Germany will face their toughest opponents in the Group F on their way of defending the world title. They came to Russia as one of the strongest favorites to reach the final and rightfully so. Germany have won all of their 10 qualifying games to reach the World Cup and are expected to start strongly at this tournament.

Croatia – Nigeria

In recent years Croatia have regularly gone into major international tournaments as a dark horse but perhaps off field issues have spilled onto the pitch to prevent them from really reaching their potential. This year they would have felt pretty good going into the World Cup Finals despite an inconsistent Qualifying campaign, but the drama never seems to be too far away from this nation.

Egypt – Uruguay

Egypt who have never won a match in the World Cup before will be hoping to surprise Uruguay when they meet on Friday. The last time that Egypt appeared in the World Cup was back in 1990 and prior to that their only other participation was back in 1934. Uruguay meanwhile will hope to do better then the last 16 they made in the last World Cup in Brazil. They have played in 12 World Cups and have won the World Cup twice in their history.

Portugal – Spain

The current European Champions Portugal square off against their Iberian neighbours Spain on Friday night to kick off their World Cup campaign. Both sides will expect to see off Morocco and Iran in their next 2 games but with either side potentially on 3 points before this clash there is even more pressure not to lose.

Argentina – Iceland

This has not been the ideal build up to the World Cup Finals for Argentina although they remain fifth favourites in most places to win the tournament having finished Runners Up four years ago. Any team with Lionel Messi leading the way has to be respected, but Argentina did not have the greatest of Qualifying campaigns and look to have been placed in what could be an awkward Group.

Liverpool – Chelsea

Liverpool was strangely presented during the week against Sevilla when he led 3 goals to the break, but failed to win the Champions League final. This performance may have served as a lesson for the composition, but can also have a negative impact on the team’s self-confidence.

Atletico Madrid – Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid still has no loss this season in La Liga. The team is entering the most important season for the season with 23 points in the league, as is the third Real Madrid. The style and the form in the last meetings are not at the highest level, but in these derby these circumstances rarely matter.
